The Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls both have the reputation of being high-spending clubs, with both filling the league's allotment for Designated Players, but Tuesday both clubs went to the other end of the player spectrum to fill out their rosters. The Galaxy signed academy product and right back Oscar Sorto, and the Red Bulls added academy players and U.S. Under-18 youth internationals Santiago Castano and Armando Moreno, with all three signing Homegrown Player deals. The 18-year-old Sorto spent time training with Swedish side Hammarby, which is coached by former Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter, this past summer. "Oscar is the first defender that we have signed as a Homegrown Player and the latest example of the strength and depth of our Academy, which is quickly becoming one of the best Academy setups in the nation,” Galaxy vice president Chris Klein said in a team statement. “He has shown tremendous potential since joining our Academy last year and we are positive that he will continue to grow and improve as a player in the coming years.” Castano, a goalkeeper, and Moreno, a forward, become the sixth and seventh Homegrown Players signed by the Red Bulls, although only one other, Connor Lade, is still currently with the team. “Both of these players have trained with the first team during the past year and they impressed our technical staff,” Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a team statement. “It is a priority for our club to bring young players from our academy to the first team and we want to congratulate Santiago and Amando for taking this step.”
