Danny Mwanga signs new contract with Portland Timbers

Portland Timbers striker Danny Mwanga has signed a new deal to keep him at the club for at least another season, the club announced on Tuesday. Per league and club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. A native of the Democratic Republic of The Congo, Mwanga's family moved to the United States when he was a teenager, settling in Portland. Mwanga attended Oregon State University for two years before the Philadelphia Union made him the club's first SuperDraft pick, the No. 1 overall pick in 2010. Mwanga had a strong debut year in the league, scoring seven goals, but he was unable to replicate the success the following season, and shortly into his third year, he was traded to the Portland Timbers in exchange for Jorge Perlaza. He scored three goals in 27 appearances in 2012. The Timbers finished with the second-worst offensive record in MLS this past season, and the club will be hoping that Mwanga can rediscover his rookie form under new coach Caleb Porter. "We are pleased to re-sign Danny and have him back in his hometown for another season," said Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson in a club statement. "He has shown what he can do in MLS and is a quality piece for the club going into the 2013 season."
